How to get your daily dose of happiness every day…
First, I have a question for you, how heavy is a glass of water? The absolute weight doesn’t matter it depends on how long you hold it.
If you hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If you hold it for an hour, you’ll have an ache in your arm.
If you hold it for a day your arm will feel numb and paralysed.
In each case the weight of the glass doesn’t change.
But the longer you hold the heavier it becomes. The stresses and worries of everyday life are the same. The longer you hold them the heavier they become. And heavier they become the less able you are to think rationally.
If you hold stress for a moment – no problem, if you hold stress for an hour it becomes heavy, if you hold stress for a day your mind becomes paralysed, unable to function.
Also, when you hold onto stressful thoughts your brain releases and unhappy chemical. Normally this chemical is there to ensure your survival.
It’s the fight or flight chemical. However, most stresses are not life threatening. So, the unhappy chemical is drip fed slowly into your bloodstream. Causing all kinds of damage.
Maybe it’s time to put the glass down – For Good.
Did you know that your brain makes four types of happy chemicals?
They are dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins.
The happy chemicals appear when something nice occurs, in other words, your brain makes these happy chemicals and releases them into your bloodstream.
Causing you to feel – you guessed it – happy.
Let’s take a closer look at these happy chemicals one at a time.
Dopamine appears when you’re achieving what you want, when you satisfy need, when you win a game, reach a goal, or take a step towards reaching a goal.
In other words, any time you anticipate something nice your brain emits a dose of dopamine.
Then there’s oxytocin. Oxytocin appears when you make friends, bond with people, when you find someone you can trust and when you socialise in a pleasant way. When your brain sends oxytocin into your bloodstream you not only make yourself feel good you make others feel good about you.
It’s like they have an invisible detector knowing that your brain has just released oxytocin into your bloodstream, and they also get a dose of oxytocin.
But if you argue or fight with others the unhappy (stress) chemical floods into your bloodstream causing damage to your body and to those you fight with because they will get a dose of the bad chemicals.
So as soon as you can put the glass down – For Good.
Serotonin appears when you feel important. An easy way to do this is to write a victory list. What you do is you look at your past achievements and make a list of them. And look at this regularly, that way you get a dose of serotonin.
Next up is endorphins. Endorphins appear when you laugh, when you lift weights, do aerobic exercise, or meditate.
The point of having happy chemicals is to break your addiction to the unhappy chemical which causes you stress.
This way you train your brain to send out the happy chemicals and get a daily D.O.S.E. of happy chemicals.
Once again that daily D.O.S.E. of happy chemicals is…
Dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins.
Now let’s take another look at why oxytocin is vital to your survival. As a baby you are wired for survival by bonding with your mother. Then later with your father and your family. After that with your peer group. And then with a significant other.
Bonding ensures your survival in many ways.
The main way it increases your resources which help you thrive as well as survive.
A part of your brain wants to make sure you survive, and your happy chemicals help you to survive and thrive.
Unhappy chemicals also help you survive but in a bad way, causing you to feel stressed, anxious and depressed.
But by training your brain daily with your daily D.O.S.E. you get to feel good and be happy.
Did you know there’s a part of your brain that can’t tell the difference between what it gives someone receives?
It’s known as the limbic system or the emotional brain.
What I’m saying here is that all you give you receive on an emotional level.
So, if you want more happy chemicals, give them to others.
If you want dopamine, help someone achieve something.
If you want oxytocin, help someone feel good about themselves.
If you want serotonin, make someone feel important.
(You can easily do this just by listening to them.)
If you want endorphins, make someone laugh or go for a walk with them.
Remember you get what you give emotionally. You get to decide if you want unhappy chemicals or happy chemicals.
All you have to do is just put the glass down – For Good.
And choose to give the happy chemicals to the people you meet every time you meet them.
